Learn about Aruba’s Palo di Boonchi
Santo Rosa, Aruba’s Department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fishery wish to share some information on the tree known on Aruba as the “Palo di Boonchi” (Bean plant). The ‘Palo di Boonchi’ originates from Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela but also Aruba. This tree is now being planted in other countries such as Uganda, Sri Lanka and other islands in the Caribbean for its beauty, but most of all for its medicinal use. The ‘Palo di Boonchi can grow 10 meters high and its flowers are orange/red. Even though this tree originates from Aruba its different uses is not really known on the island.

‘Palo di Boonchi is used to make floaters for fish nets, the construction of miniature boats and also in a cream version to be used as an insect repellent. It is also reported to be used against insomnia, cough and nerves. Department of Agriculture, Husbandry and Fisheries (DLVVM) has 4 trees of ‘Palo di Boonchi’ in its garden at Piedra Plat #114 A, between the Protestant Church and the Piedra Plat bridge. The trees are on the brink of flowering and can be seen by the public during office hours.
