Aruba’s Health Department has provided some information about two “variants of concern” in circulation in Aruba. The first is the UK variant (also known as B.1.1.7) and the second is the Brazil variant (also known as P.1). According to tests done, at least 29 cases of the UK variant and at least 1 case of the Brazil variant have been confirmed in Aruba by the Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). Both of these variants are of concern since they are more contagious and in the case of the Brazil variant, more dangerous also. According to Aruba’s Department of Health, just 6.5% of Aruba’s population have been reported as having been infected with COVID-19, meaning that the majority of the population is still vulnerable, and even more so to these variants of concern. This is also why the current safety measures are being maintained, and why the general public continues to be encouraged to maintain safety protocols and not drop their guard, despite the vaccination program under way which of course Aruba’s population continues to be encouraged to participate in and which has been seeing a very positive response. The Aruba Health Department continues to closely monitor the situation of these variants of concern in collaboration with RIVM in the Netherlands.
