Sarah Wigman and Dirk Rohr, living in The Netherlands, had a very special reason to marry in Aruba. Sarah’s grandfather, Joop Hille, lived in Aruba for many years and worked at Dienst Openbare Werken (DOW). One of his projects was to restyle the Chapel of Alto Vista after it was damaged by a fire in 1952. After his retirement and moving back to The Netherlands, Joop, his wife and his daughter returned to Aruba for many vacations, each time accompanied by a growing group of grandchildren and nowadays also with great grandchildren.

Grand daughter Sarah had a wish for many years: to exchange symbolic vows with the love of her life Dirk at the Chapel. Her dream came true last week. After the official wedding ceremony in Oranjestad and accompanied by family and lifelong friends from Aruba, the newlyweds went to the tiny chapel that stands on the hills above Aruba’s north shore to give a speech and light candles during an emotional ceremony.

Sarah and Dirk now look back to an unforgettable wedding day with a stark reminder of a far different period of Aruban history and in honor and memory of their beloved grandfather, Joop.
