Rain and Floods in Aruba ... nowhere to go and no discount.

Trip Report Nov. 29 - Dec 06 1999

Where do I begin ... I am a time share owner for 9 years, so I know how Aruba was when it first began. I stayed at the Holiday Inn and had such a good time, I purchased a time share at Playa Linda Beach Resort. I was looking for a place to go and in knowing this place would come alive ... hopefully profit on the price of my time share.

Well, the alive part happened ... as for the profit ... this is what I got  after 9 years.

I arrived in Aruba around 2:30 PM, across the street, I picked up my reserved
car. In the car rental place the man complained it had rained all week and
suggested maybe it would clear. We Stopped at the Supermarket to get food,
because of the rain we didn't want to come back out for dinner.

Upon reaching Playa Linda's check in, I was informed that my timeshare had
already been rented out and they had canceled me. I didn't receive any of
the mail they said they sent, but they said they sent it to the same address
3 times and it kept coming back ... a sure sign, that I did not receive it.

Even though they say I am still the owner of the timeshare... ( hee hee) they
canceled me and rented it out. Said after my long day of getting there, they
had no place for me to stay. Oh no, you will find me a place. You see check
in is Sun and I arrived Mon. They thought I was not coming. I went through
that dilemma.

Now we want to go fishing, snorkeling, horse back riding, a romantic cruise,
drive to the natural bridge, Charlie's Bar, climb the 500 foot mountain, find
a bat cave, see the old slave jail and of course mingle with the locals.
Day 1 ... rain. Day 2 ... rain. Day 3 rain. Day 4 ... rain. Day 5 it looks like it will clear, we will go down to the seaport and see if we can go fishing. We get there and there is no Captain, suddenly it pours ... rain. You see the beautiful island of Aruba has no meteorologist, the weather normally stays 85 ... with beautiful Divi Divi winds.Day 6 ... rain.

Now we were supposed to switch from Playa Linda,( where I straightened out
the matter there ) ... but ends on Sunday. The Mill Resort was flooded out
and again we had no place to stay (luckily we saw it in the paper ). Playa
Linda had a studio we could rent for the total of $150 dollars a night, it
was on the other side and the view was terrible but that is where we stayed.
Day 7 ... here come the sun. It still takes us half hour to get to the
Airport with the barricaded streets, the pot holes and the morning traffic
all trying to decide which way to go.

I must say this is not the same vacation I was hoping for and I wish they
could give me some sort of refund. But you see Aruba is changing and they
aren't as nice and as caring as they use to be. I even hear they have crime
now and they didn't before.

Even though I still found a way to satisfy myself ... working out, hot tub in
the rain, catching a tan through the clouds and renting videos. I still left
feeling like Aruba owed me a little change. Aruba says that some times either the mail is very late or they don't receive it and if they don't get mines another time and I am inconvenienced. I may only be seeing Aruba for only one more year.

Aruba is changing, I wish you could have seen its innocent beauty when I
first arrived.
