Aruba Hi-Winds Tournament

The Aruba Hi-Winds 2011 will take place from Wednesday evening June 29th until Monday evening July 4th.

About Aruba Hi Winds

The Aruba Hi-Winds has been the biggest and best known watersport event of the Caribbean for a period of 24 years. Since 1987 the event has drawn the participation of international surf professionals such as Bjorn Dunckerbeck, Robby Naish and Anders Bringdal, which increased the global visibility of Aruba and acquired a lot of media-attention. Since 1996 the Aruba Hi-Winds has been held at the Fisherman's Hut. This spot is the best on the island for windsurfing and kitesurfing ensuring the international participants an awesome experience.

In the beginning the Aruba Hi-Winds was a professional sports event. In 1997 the Aruba Hi-Winds became an amateur status event. However, with the new change of government, the focus is to get the event professional status once again, (they aim to boost the sportive image of Aruba) . In 2002, kite surfing became part of the Aruba Hi-Winds, which makes the event even more diverse. Also, the number of participants is still growing steady year after year. Last year there we had 180 participants, and the event draws the attention of around 2000 spectators.

This year Jalou Langeree, (a professional kitesurfer from The Netherlands), will be here to Judge the kitesurfing events, demonstrate her skills on the water and boost the profile of the event. Jalou Langeree is very well-known in the kitesurfing global community and her visit is sure to motivate many of the young, talented amateurs resident on Aruba and visiting the event.

Besides the matches and races there are several bands, DJ's, food and drink stands and side-events on the beach.

Ever thought about racing in a tropical paradise? Race during the day and enjoy an incredible entertainment program with delicious dinners and enjoyable parties at night! It is the aim of the organizing committee to make the Aruba Hi-Winds within reach of as many sailors as possible from all economic backgrounds and from the various corners of the earth. Therefore, the organization has put together some very attractive deals on accommodation and registration fees.

Whether you're a traditional down-wind slalom racer, a fearless freestyler or if you're joined the newest craze in water sports: kite boarding, Aruba Hi-Winds is there for you!

Kiteboarding Rules

1. Safety and fair play are the most important aspects of the competition. Unsafe riders will be disqualified. Leeward riders have right of way, therefore Windward riders should not jump when a leeward rider is close to them. When crossing paths a windward rider should keep his kite up high while a leeward rider should keep his kite down.

2. Riders must not change course to obstruct another rider nor jump near or over other competitors.

3. Riders should stay clear of the competition area when not competing.

4. Riders should not land jumps on the beach and should stay clear of any natural obstructions or permanent fixtures such as boats (including rescue- and jury boat) near or in the competition area. (Infringements on any of the above rules could result in disqualification at the discretion of the head judge)

5. Each rider is responsible for checking his heat number. This will be posted on the official notice board at least half an hour before the start of the first heat.

6. Riders are required to wear the official contest lycra shirt during their heats. Riders should check in with the marshal two heats prior to competing and will receive a color lycra shirt which will identify them to the judges. Competitors not wearing the shirt during their heats will not be scored. After the rider has completed his heat, the lycra shirt must be returned to the beach marshal when returning to the beach.

7. The Contest Director, Head Judge and Event Organizer will collectively make the decision as to the suitability of the conditions for running heats.

8. The freestyle judging criteria will be overall impression, taking in consideration technical difficulty, height and smoothness, including landings.

9. Judges will take brief notes of the moves performed during the heats, but will not assign moves a numerical value in their notes.

10. There shall be a single elimination for the freestyle competition.
